Phytoplankton

Marine plants

This is a picture of what is in sea water: billions of small plants known as phytoplankton.

These phytoplankton are responsible for producing about half of the oxygen in the atmosphere, and also for reducing the level of carbon dioxide (CO2),

In addition they provide food for tiny marine animals, known as zooplankton, at the start of the food chain.

Global warming is reducing the number of phytoplankton at a fast rate.

White Knight

A biplane?

Is this a biplane? Not really. A biplane has two sets of wings, not two fuselages.

This is known as White Knight and is the plane that will be used to launch a rocket-plane into space. The passengers will then spend some time experiencing weightlessness before gliding back to the ground, hopefully from the same place that they started.

But this isn’t free. It is a commercial enterprise for paying passengers, and the cost of a ticket is very high. In fact it is so high that only the very wealthy will be able to afford it.

I wonder how much of the earth’s resources will get used by this project?

The Oasis of the Seas

A floating city

The biggest cruise ship will soon make its first trip.

It has even got a park

Of course there are many rooms (the biggest rooms even have a grand piano), and also 22 restaurants.

View from above

It certainly looks impressive, but what about its carbon footprint?

Greenbird

A sail-car
A sail-car

It’s green. It’s a car. It has no engine. It uses wind-power only.

And it can travel at a speed of more than 200 kph!

Richard Jenkins from the UK designed, built and drove this car, and it just broke the world record speed for a wind-powered car.

Paradise island

Have you ever wondered what paradise looks like? Well, this is it!

It is called Paradise Island and it is one of thousands of islands in the Maldives. The only problem is that in about 50 years this island will not exist.

Glacier

This is a glacier in Alaska. A glacier is like a river of ice, but it moves very very slowly. However there is a big problem with this glacier: it is melting.

It makes a great photo with the bright blue lake at the bottom of the glacier, but it should not be there!
