Spurs 4-1 FC Twente (Holland)

This was a very special game for my favourite football team, Tottenham (nickname Spurs). It was their first home game in the top European competition since 1962, 48 years ago!

And they won. The goalscorers were van der Vaart (Holland), Pavlyuchenko 2 pk (Russia) and Bale (Wales).

Rafael van der Vaart, missed a pk, scored a goal, got a red card.

The score of 4-1 seems like an easy win, but it wasn’t. The penalty kicks were a little lucky and FC Twente played very well. Spurs will need more luck when they play the European champions, Inter Milan.

Werder Bremen 2-2 Spurs

This was Spurs first ever game in the European Champions’ League. They travelled to Werder Bremen (Germany) for a really tough game.

Spurs scored the first two goals, an own goal, and a header from Crouch (England) but Werder are an excellent team and they also scored twice so the match was drawn. A good start for Spurs, but they are in the same group as the European champions, Inter Milan, so it will get tougher.

Spurs 4-0 Young Boys (6-3)

My favourite soccer team Spurs (Tottenham Hotspur) beat Young Boys of Bern, Switzerland 4-0 last night, but the important numbers are 6-3, which is the aggregate score including the first game which Young Boys won 3-2.

The goalscorers were Crouch (England) 3, and Defoe (England).

So Spurs qualify for the European Champions League, which not only is the greatest football competition, it is also the the richest, so Spurs will make a lot of money.

Young Boys 3-2 Spurs

An important goal from Pav

My favourite soccer team Spurs (Tottenham Hotspur) is back in a European competition. This time it is not the UEFA Cup, it is the Champions League, the big one. It is the first time for Spurs to be in this competition since 1961 when it was simply called the European Cup, 50 years ago!

Spurs first match in Champions League qualifying was last week against Young Boys (Switzerland). By the way Young Boys are not young boys, they are an excellent football team and they have a big advantage, their home pitch is not grass, it is an artificial surface.

Spurs have rarely played on such a surface and were 3-0 down after only 30 minutes. It could have been the end of Spurs return to Europe, but Spurs battled back and scored two goals from Bassong (France) and Pavlyuchenko (Russia).

So Spurs lost, but they only lost by one goal. The return game at Spurs home ground will be on Wednesday. Spurs need to win, but they are playing pretty well at the moment so there is some hope.

Spurs 1(1) – 1(3) Shakhtar Donetsk

Spurs drew 1-1 with Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine), but they had already lost the first game 0-2 so Shakhtar progress to the last 16 of the UEFA Cup and Spurs’ European adventure is over. Spurs’ goalscorer was Giovani (Mexico), 19 years old.

Shakhtar are a very good team, but Spurs played an important game on Monday evening, and they have an even more important game on Sunday (the final of the Carling Cup against Manchester United), so they rested their best players and most of the team were teenagers.

Shakhtar Donetsk 2-0 Spurs

It looks like Spurs’ European adventure will soon end. In the first leg of the UEFA Cup match against Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine) a very weak Spurs team lost 2-0.

In the return game at Spurs’ home ground Spurs will have to score at least three goals to progress to the next round, but if Shakhtar score one goal then Spurs will have to score four! It’s not looking good.

NEC Nijmegen 0-1 Tottenham

Spurs win another game in the UEFA Cup, away to Nijmegen of Holland. O’Hara (England) scored the only goal and Spurs played pretty well. They now have a very good chance to proceed to the last 32, but there is still one more group match to play.

Spurs 4-0 Dinamo Zagreb

At last Spurs are looking good. In the UEFA Cup match against Dinamo Zagreb (Croatia) they had a great 4-0 victory with goals from Bent (England), 3, and Huddlestone (England).

There is now a much better chance of progressing to the next stage of the cup, but still some really difficult games in the next few weeks.

Udinese 2-0 Spurs

My favourite team Spurs is in deep trouble.

A few days ago they lost in the UEFA Cup to Udinese of Italy, and they played very poorly. Spurs still have a chance to qualify for the next round, but they must really improve their performance.

Goodbye Juande
Goodbye Juande

This is a photo of the team manager (coach), Juande Ramos, after the game. He was sacked yesterday. I think he was a good manager who tried his very best, but things have been going very badly at Spurs this season, so it is normal that he must leave. I am sure he will get a lot of money as compensation.

At the same time a new manager was appointed, Harry Redknapp. He is a little older than Ramos, and has a lot more experience in English football, but not so much in European football. I think it is quite a good choice, let’s hope that results improve.

Spurs in Europe again

The top football club competition in Europe is the European Champions League, which was won last season by Manchester United, who beat Chelsea in the final.

However there is also another European football competition, the UEFA Cup. The clubs in the UEFA Cup are of an extremely high standard, but they are not quite as good as the elite clubs that can enter the Champions League.

My favourite team, Tottenham Hotspur (nickname Spurs) is now in the UEFA for the fourth time. Last week the 1st round matches were played. Spurs played at home against Wisla Krakow (Poland) in the 1st leg. Spurs have had a terrible start to this season, played 4, lost 3, drawn 1, but at last they had a victory 2-1 against Wisla. The scorers were Bentley and Bent, and here is Bent’s goal.

But this is a very slim win for Spurs, and Wisla can easily win the return game in Poland, to knock Spurs out of the UEFA Cup.

PSV Eindhoven 0-1 Spurs (1-1, 6-5 pk)

So Spurs were able to win their UEFA Cup game last night against PSV Eindhoven (Holland), with a goal from Dimitar Berbatov (Bulgaria). But what do the other numbers mean?

Basically they mean that Spurs are out! PSV won the first game and Spurs won the second game, so the total score was 1-1. So the game was decided by penalty kicks and PSV won the pk contest 6-5. It was very close, and now Spurs cannot win anything more this season.

However they have qualified for the UEFA Cup again next season so let’s follow them again from August.

Here is a picture of Jermaine Jenas (England), who later missed his penalty kick!

Tottenham 0-1 PSV Eindhoven

Oh no, not a good result. PSV Eindhoven (Holland)  played very well and deserved to win, the winning goal was scored by Farfan (Peru), which you can see below.
The second game is in Eindhoven, and Spurs obviously need to win to progress to the last eight. A 1-0 win for Spurs would mean penalty kicks, and a 2-1 win (or any other win) would mean that Spurs can progress because they will have scored more away goals. A draw is enough for PSV.
