There is no doubting the beauty of this painting from 1905, the Nympheas, or waterlilies, by Claude Monet, but is it really worth 43 million US dollars, which it was sold for yesterday.
Here is a photo I took in the very same pond in Monet’s garden in Giverny earlier this year.
It cost the entrance fee of about 10 euros.

You must remember that Monet’s eyes and mind were the digital camera of the day. Your photo is more appealing and real than his painting, but there is also a quality to the painting that impresses the image in one’s mind.

Fully agree Grumpa Joe, and I would certainly rather have Monet’s painting on my wall than my photo. There is just something of the socialist in me that questions the amount someone would spend on this painting. 43 million dollars could help a great deal of impoverished people.

Patrick: I would not mind having your photo hanging on my wall. I have Monet prints, but always enjoy seeing the real thing. The money would feed a lot of people but so would the cost of socialistic bureaucracies.
