Pencil: grading

You have all seen the letters H and B on your pencils.

‘H’ means hardness and ‘B’ means ‘blackness’.

The standard writing pencil is HB.

‘F’ is also used and this means fine.

This system was started in the early 1900s by an English pencil-maker named Brookman.

  1. It was a company rather than a person, and a rather large company which was started around 1775 by Stephen Brookman, using the purest graphite found in the very north of England, Cumbria.
